PLANK at IDFA
17 Nov 2009PLANK, a documentary by Billy Pols about the Moroccan-Dutch skateboarder Nassim Guammaz will be shown at the International Documentary Festival Amsterdam from 19-29 November. PLANK will also be broadcasted on television next Saturday at 13.25 on Nederland 3.
The 15-year-old Dutch-Moroccan Nassim is a skateboarder -- even though he is well aware that Moroccans are supposed to like soccer or kickboxing. "They just don't think it's cool," he explains, "When they think of skaters, they think of that Gothic shit and people with black nail polish." Now that his parents are divorced, Nassim lives with his mother and sisters. Things were "not cool" at home before his folks split. Watching old family videos, he talks about his relationship with his father: "He was more interested in teaching me a lesson than teaching me stuff." Because his father did not keep his word about paying for soccer, Nassim started skating -- it is free, after all, and you can do it anywhere. Nassim wants to become a pro-skater when he is older. School, a job, or his own family are low on his list, so every day he practices dangerous stunts with his skate buddies. "Skating is my springboard to another world." This is the first year that Nassim will not be joining his family on their annual vacation to Morocco. He is participating in big skating competitions, including the Grand Prix of Rotterdam. Nassim demonstrates his coolest moves, although it sometimes ends up causing him (and even the camera) physical damage. The film also features some remarkable competition footage and a soundtrack with everything from hip-hop to the folk rock of Cat Stevens.

Spitting Ink at IDFA
10 Nov 2009Spitting Ink, a documentary by Ralph de Haan and Lars Siemens on beat poetry in New York City has its world premiere at the IDFA and runs in the competions Premieres of the Lowlands and First Appearance. Besides the sold out premiere at 23 November Spitting Ink will be shown three times at the festival:
25-11 at 18:15 (Munt 13)
26-11 at 15:30 (Tuschinski 4)
27-11 at 20:00 (OBA)
In the United States, a poetry subculture has grown up around a group of young, mostly non-white spoken-word artists. Although the work they produce is widely diverse, it tends to have a strong affinity with contemporary social reality and urban culture. The poets' work is not aimed at a mass audience, and they perform in small clubs. Each of them has found his or her own way to focus the power of the spoken word. Spitting Ink is a portrait of some of these artists. Interviews and live performances are interspersed with images of the streets of New York -- not the orderly, well-to-do neighborhoods, but their lively and sometimes dilapidated backstreet counterparts, with their graffiti-covered walls, subway trains, and bars. Spoken-word artist Mike Ladd speaks about this poetry's origins and background (its roots in gospel and other forms) and about how it reached a turning point with the arrival of rap. Beau Sia creates poetry both to impress the girls and to rebut prejudices about his Asiatic roots; Celena Glenn only writes once a year, when her head is full to overflowing and dozens of poems suddenly stream out.

THE NETHERLANDS IN 12 MURDERS
4 Mar 2009YANi, Paul Postma and Roland Mylanus made the leader for the television documentary series THE NETHERLANDS IN 12 MURDERS. The series are put together by writers / historians Jan Blokker, Jan Blokker jr. and Bas Blokker and directed by Paul Cohen, Thomas Doebele and Maarten Schmidt. Paul Postma designed the film poster.
THE NETHERLANDS IN 12 MURDERS shows the dark side of the Netherlands and her inhabitants on the basis of 12 historical murders. While we like to believe differently, our history is full of murders committed out of hysteria, intolerance or hypocricy. From the Yde Girl, probably sacrificed around the beginning of the Christian era to the gods to Theo van Gogh, who had to die for another god. And from the poison murder on Jan van Beieren to the execution of Jan Pieterszoon Coen's reserve officer candidate Pieter Cortenhoeff, who fell in love with one of Coen's maids.
All 12 murders appear stopmotion animated in the unique leader. Watch the leader 12 MURDERS
DJ. A COLLECTION OF DJ PORTRAITS by Krijn van Noordwijk
4 Mar 2009With over 140 full colour studio portraits of DJ's from all over the world, photographer Krijn van Noordwijk honours today's musical hero. Most of the time, your average person in an audience only catches a glimpse of the artist, standing behind a pair of decks on a vast distant stage. Now his book is showing some of the personalities close up, in more than one sense. It puts an icon to the idol.
All portraits are shot in a classical way, technically speaking. But the expressions and emotions of the subjects are rather contemporary. Van Noordwijk spent over two years of DJ hunting to create his unique collection of some of the world's best-known and most talented DJ's. Carl Cox, Armin van Buuren, Sven Väth, Derrick May, Tommie Sunshine and Juan Atkins are just some of the names that go with the faces in this book. Krijn's idiosyncratic style of portrait photography makes this collection a true tribute to the DJ.
The book is for sale at www.djthebook.com.
